Johnny Rawls and The Rays
No Boundries
Johnny Rawls was born in Purvis, Mississippi and as a teenager worked with such stars as Z Z Hill, Little Johnny Taylor, and Joe Tex. In the mid seventies, Johnny worked as band director for O. B. Wright. In 1980 Johnny joined up with Little Johnny Taylor and led his band for several years. By 1985 Johnny Rewls had broken out on his own and made his first solo recording. His discography includes Down To Earth – Rooster Blues, 1994, Can’t Sleep All Night – Rooster Blues, 1995, Here We Go – JSP, 1996, Lucky Man – Deep Soul South – self release, Live In Montana – Deep Soul South – self release, and No Boundaries – Topcat Records, 2005 with The Rays.
Johnny appeared on the cover of the April, 2002 Living Blues Magazine which described him as “a soul – blues Renaissance man”. He has been nominated 4 times for W. C. Handy awards and tours constantly, playing over 200 dates a year in the U. S. and Europe. Johnny Rewls persuaded The Rays (of Kay Kay And The Rays fame) to get back together for the No Boundaries project which Johnny produced along with Rays’ guitar player Steve Lott. Other members of The Rays are Dan Ferguson – keyboards, Andy Roman – saxophone and both J. T. Paz and Richie Puga on drums.
