When the average fan thinks of hotbeds of the blues, he or she thinks of cities like Chicago, Austin, and Memphis, and even such far-flung outposts as London and Paris. That’s all set to change, however, as this red-hot Brazilian, guitarist, Big Gilson, is poised to put Rio de Janeiro on the blues map.
Gilson performs prolifically with his “big time” band, the wildly successful Brazilian blues-rock quintet Big Allanbik (Portuguese for “Big Whiskey Still”), as well as his blues threesome Big Gilson and Blues Dynamite, touring both North and South America. Gilson and co. have released four CDs in their native country and one CD in the USA, Cab Driver Blues (TopCat). This CD features Gilson tearing it up at New York’s hallowed Blue Note. He’s backed by the Solid Senders, fronted by east coast harmonicist Bruce Ewan with his pal, guitarist Bobby Radcliff, sitting in.
From the growling slide riff at the intro of the title track, you’ll know that this is some hot bluesman. Not hot Brazilian bluesman, mind you, but hot bluesman, period.
Live at the Blue Note takes the listener though several phases. Funky beat and sizzling slide of Gilson’s trademark “Cab Driver Blues”. There’s Chicago-style blues on the Little Walter tunes Blue and Lonesome and I Got to Go, on which Ewan sings and blows harp. Bobby Radcliff plays some cool licks on the rockin’ standard, Shake Your Moneymaker. Gilson’s own Hey Doc is an aggressive shuffle with lengthy statements from Gilson and Ewan, with Gilson offering seven full courses of hot slide work. On the first five he cooks, on the sixth and seventh he’s positively on fire. Gilson’s Tribute to Roy Buchanan is a high point of this heady, lively CD. Big Gilson with Bruce Ewan & the Solid Senders is destined to receive great reviews and is sure to be one of the top CD releases of 2002.
